my 2c:

1. I found that being too attached to a specific manager poses risk, in case that manager leaves their position. For people looking for a job, I'd recommend definitely evaluating their future manager, but at the same time ensuring the company's mission and overall culture resonates with them, such that if their good manager disappears they still have reasons to stay there (assuming they want to stick around).

2. It makes a HUGE difference if a manager genuinely cares about peoples careers. Some managers just don't, some say they do but they actually don't, and those who care are the fantastic ones. I've had all three types.
