It’s interesting that before the pandemic there were remote first companies that tended to do very well. Of course, this required some special arrangements - summits once per quarter, very lively slack where people would actually said what they thought... It’s all a matter of culture. I don’t have an answer to the problem of onboarding senior people, though. But it seems there are companies who know how to do that.

A significant portion of my team works from home since long before the pandemic and will continue to do so, but it is an interesting puzzle for a new college graduate to successfully onboard this sort of team. We're scattered around the globe. The core leadership remains at the old HQ site and drives in multiple times a week through horrendous traffic and do indeed benefit from both casual interactions and 1:1 meetings. Very few meetings are not conducted via Zoom, virtually all meetings have significant virtual attendance. Slack channels abound, but in my opinion are either too noisy to be useful or very limited in scope. It is interesting to consider, given the significant life events that have happened since moving away from the HQ area, what life would be like right now had I not moved.
