I share similar Google experience starting in 2004 and seeing 1.5-2 generations of technology. I used the predecessor of borg! My post Google experiences are also similar. But honestly, no other company has had anywhere near the high percentage of truly talented engineers. While my last company was rather lackluster, I did have a few experiences that were reminiscent of Google days, where people would come out of the woodwork to ask for my help or advice for projects I was not assigned to. It's difficult to not live in the past....
Near the end of my time in Zürich I was the victim in a Wheel of Misfortune exercise. Once the (simulated) problem was stated, I started giving the displayer instructions to go to this internal web site and that, execute certain commands, etc. A lot of my colleagues looked all funny, wondering what I was doing. Then Liam Bedford told them: He is not trolling you, that's how we used to that. The (unspoken) part of that message was: Jos is not up to speed with all the new webapps we built to make system management easier :-)
Thank you for your kind words. I must say it is always surprising to learn which articles resonate with people. Sometimes I post one where I think that it is going to be hugely popular and it isn't, and sometimes it is the other way around.
Ah, those good old days. Thank you for your article, it was good to bathe a bit in nostalgia. Those times were great. At least we are really lucky to have collected lots of pleasant memories and accumulated plenty of knowledge and experience.
